OUR MUSIC

As it relates to style, we sing a cappella (no instruments) that is similar to gospel groups like Take 6, Glad and Commission (the old Commission).  For those of you who may not be familiar with this type of music, it is generally comprised of three, four or more part harmony.  We use songs that have been written by these groups but have composed a number of our own as well.

We sing songs about the love of God as demonstrated in Jesus Christ as well as patriotic songs.  We started off just singing simple songs like 'Jesus Loves Me' and putting harmonies to it.  Martin has always been able to keep his own part (as far back as I can remember) and when Mariah was seven, she could keep her own part too, so we tried more complicated things like “Wade In The Water” by Take 6.  In the beginning, it was hard for Morgan to stay on her own notes.  I remember just crying one night because Morgan just couldn’t get her part.  I thought God had played a real cruel joke on me; He gave me Mikal who usually sings melody, then Martin, who has perfect pitch and makes up super tight harmonies on his own and then Mariah who takes harmonies to an even DEEPER level – almost unbelievable.  Then came Morgan who would follow whose ever voice was the loudest.  I just cried.  I couldn’t believe it.  I prayed and prayed, pleading with God to help her to have her own sound and to be able to stay on her own part.  And….. I do believe in miracles.  After about a month, she totally kept her part and did an excellent job.  Of course, she was only six at this time so I guess I didn’t really have that much to cry about but it was an earth shaker to me at the time.  Anyway, she now stays in her lane and is improving all the time.  I am so grateful!!!

We have learned some African songs as well.  We love them because of the beat of the songs.  We want to add more to our repertoire so it’s a never ending thing.

We believe that music is such an important part of us as people.  We can look at the Bible and see that music was always being played (and it all started in heaven).  Often times, when we aren’t able to speak words, listening, singing or even writing a song can sooth the soul.
